Urbino

The pearl on the Renaissance, Urbino owes its worldwide fame to Duke Federico da Montefeltro; an enlightened leader, in the second half of the 1400s he transformed his duchy into one of Italy’s richest and most cultured dominions, calling artists and intellectuals of the first order from all over Europe (among the Piero della Francesca, Giusto di Gand, Pedro Berreguete, Luciano Laurana and Francesco di Giorgio Martini), and having the magnificent Palazzo Ducale or Ducal Palace built (currently home to the National Gallery of the Marches, which contains masterworks such as “The Flagellation”, “The Ideal City” and “La Muta”). Urbino is a Unesco world heritage city since 1998.
